Skomer stars in Wild Isles!

It’s been exciting to see British wildlife in the spotlight in Attenborough’s new series, Wild Isles. It as an honour to host Sir David and the Wild Isles team on our Skomer Island Reserve, and to be featured in the first episode of the series. We were fortunate to catch up with Sir David behind the scenes to chat about his most memorable wildlife experience in South & West Wales - we're delighted to say it was our puffins!

Help us to save the River Wye

The River Wye is dying. We already know that nutrient runoff from intensive livestock farming, and soil erosion are the primary causes of the spread of algal blooms that are devastating the river’s ecosystem. And yet, a significant backwards step was taken when Welsh Government announced a three-month delay in important water quality regulations. It’s critical that there are no further delays to water quality regulations and a new Agriculture (Wales) Bill must support farmers to do the best for wildlife, and significantly improve the state of the River Wye catchment. We also want to help Welsh Government to meet its international commitments to nature’s recovery, as agreed at COP15. That’s why Radnorshire Wildlife Trust have launched the next phase of our #SavetheWye campaign. If you live in Wales, your constituent Member of Senedd can help to save the Wye. Ask them to speak up by sending a free postcard that will land on the doormat of their office. MSs always want to hear from their constituents – use the postcard to voice your concerns and the action you want to see. You could also share why a healthy River Wye matters to you:

Montgomeryshire

An Exciting start to Spring for Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust!

It’s been a great start to spring at Montgomeryshire Wildlife Trust. Welsh naturalist Iolo Williams’ new BBC Wales series, Iolo’s Borderlands, shone a light on two of our nature reserves: wildflower meadows Ty Brith and National Nature Reserve Roundton Hill. The popular programme also saw Iolo visit the Montgomery Canal, a Special Area of Conservation (SAC) that’s under threat and the subject of a campaign we’re currently running. Our Cors Dyfi Nature Reserve near Machynlleth – which featured in The Times’ ’20 best places to spot the UK’s rarest creatures’ this month – was also delighted to welcome back our breeding pair of Ospreys, Telyn and Idris, who arrived right on time and have already laid a full clutch of eggs. In other news, we were over the moon to secure funding to continue our award-winning nature for wellbeing project, Wild Skills Wild Spaces.

The Montgomery Canal needs your help!

Please join Montgomeryshire’s campaign to defend The Montgomery Canal. Plans are being made to restore the canal and part of the plan won’t help nature recover. Rare and much-loved species are at risk. Find out more about Montgomeryshire’s campaign and back our  calls for sensitive restoration that won’t destroy this internationally important wildlife site.

The Ocean Rescue Champions, our group of young marine conservationists, recently featured on Blue Peter in the "Let It Grow" episode, explaining all about planting seagrass seeds. The young people have been playing their part in seagrass conservation. They have learned what seagrass is, why it is important, and participated in seed collection at a healthy seagrass meadow which will help with seagrass restoration projects.  Receiving a green Blue Peter badge for the Trust felt like a really great way to mark our 60th Anniversary!

Our new cohort of Ocean Rescue Champions had their first session on Earth Day - we are so excited for them to begin their conservation journey with us.

This group of budding conservationists will be taking positive action to learn more about the marine environment and what we can all do to help look after it.
